BloodTrace combines the production of a unique laser printable tag recording patient information for blood bag identification, with a means of recording the fate of each individual unit of blood on a ‘receipt’ section.

Without any alteration to host systems, BloodTrace-Print takes data from current systems and prints this onto a BloodTrace tag. An ISBT 128* barcode is also produced.

As the tag is printed, an image of the tag can be automatically created, hosted and indexed together with other associated forms, as part of an electronic information management solution; BloodTrace-Audit .

Every receipt slip is scanned after being returned to the Blood Transfusion Department, and the image created is hosted against the original. After a defined period of time, any original image that does not have an associated receipt will be easily identified and flagged up as an exception, enabling automatic investigation into units of blood whose fate is unknown.

The Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005 required the fate of all blood units to be tracked and recorded.
